HOMEOPATHY FOR SELF-TRANSCENDENCE
SPORTS AND ULTRARUNNING

This is a booklet I made to help athletes running ultra distances (above the 42km / 26mi distance), but it can also help the average sportsman.
This booklet is an extremely simplified list of remedies for running and sports, specially endurance and ultra events, as well as simplified guidelines for usage. You can try during a race. They might save you as the Supreme´s Grace and are very unlikely to create problems if you do a minor misuse. If you are taking homeopathic treament, please see your homeopath before using this.

- to choose the remedy the most important are the unusual characteristics (ex: worse on first movement, better after warming up, better by warmth is good indication for RHUS TOX when dealing with joints). Only one indication, such as “better by warmth” is usually too generic to choose a remedy. On the next pages you will see examples.
- potency: homeopathic remedies come in potencies labeled with a number and a letter (ex: 6D, 12X or 30C). D is the same as X, C is higher, and also the higher the number the more intense is the effect and higher range of action. But for things such as open wounds or traumas (base level of body) low potencies might be best. I suggest 6C and/or 30 to be taken orally for most problems during a race such as an ultramarathon. I also suggest getting a portable kit in 6C or 30C potency. They cost 100 USD. Or you can buy the most important ones individually and have them with your equipment.
- Try not to eat or drink anything other than water soon before or after remedy. Ideally, rest a few minutes, maybe even lying down. Take the remedy orally only once (1 drop or pill is enough) and wait for reaction (from a few seconds to a few hours). If no reaction, try other remedy or if you think it has to be the right remedy, then try a diferent potency. If it works, wait for complete recovery. If recovery stops, repeat remedy. If then no reaction or symptoms change, change remedy or potency.
- strong emotions, tastes (coffee, toothpaste, strong smelling creams (camphor especially)), traumas, etc, can stop the course of remedy action. Repeat the remedy if you feel such incidents have stopped remedy action.
- you can also rub the some drops of the remedy on the affected part, besides taking it orally.
- for dilution of drops or pellets, use a plastic cup or bottle and then throw it away. Even if you wash it, some effect of the remedy will remain and might confuse you.
- meditate before taking remedy!
- use of allopathic medicine to mask symptoms might affect action of homeopathic medicine.

EXAMPLES OF REMEDY SELECTION
Please notice these are simplified methods!
In the Self-Transcendence 10-day race, at one point the right side of my right knee (something like the IT band insertion) was very painful, red and swollen. I tried stretching and many things for at least a full day, but didn´t really help. I could hardly walk and decided to take a 15min rest break, because there was not much else I could do. I thought I might try some homeopathy.
So the symptoms were:
- right knee / tendon
- worse in the morning
- worse by movement
- better by rest
If you take a look at BRYONIA: “Swelling of joints, redness, stitching pains. Especially on left side.
worse by motion and morning, better by rest and pressure”
Bryonia fits well with swelling, redness, worse in the morning, worse by motion and better by rest. Even if Bryonia has a tendency towards left side, this does not exclude it. There are so many indications for it already.
So I took the remedy Bryonia 30C and decided to wait for 15 minutes on the bed. Actually, I felt like going out before that! The first 1-mile lap started bad as usual, but after half a lap, I thought it might be improving. After one more lap, I was running again. After still one more lap I was running almost painless from that tendon!
Later on, my left knee was hurting “significantly”, if you get my point. It was on the very left side, on the middle region of the left lateral. It felt like tearing something. I could not run more than 10 metres or so, and could walk with tiring pain. It was as if the tendons on the side were so tight! It was very similar in characteristics to the problem I had described earlier, so I took Bryonia again. However, Bryonia did not give relief. So I started to look at the remedies and found something peculiar while looking at Causticum. I was feeling much better after staying inside my warm sleeping bag. Also, It was difficult to keep quiet inside the sleeping bag when sleeping at night - I felt like moving my legs every 30 seconds.
Look at CAUSTICUM: “Contraction of tendons, tearing and burning pains, restless at night. worse by motion, dryness, cold and evening, better by warmth, lying on warm bed, wet weather”
Besides the tendon contraction, tearing pains and worse by motion, “restless at night” could have to do with movement of legs and “better lying on warm bed” is very clear. I took Causticum 30C (and later 6C) and felt clear improvements the whole day!

There are many more remedies. This is a condensed list.
When there is edema - soft swelling and stinging pains. Redness. Stinging pain, numbness.
better by cold, cold bathing, open air
worse by warmth, afternoon hours, after sleep, touch, right side, closed heated rooms
Not generally for use in sports. It works mostly for trauma - when you hit your toe while running and you can see there is blood accumulated, causing pain. Arnica will help to flush the imprisoned blood and let the organism recompose. Also useful for emotional shock. Pain as when lying on bed for many days. Bed seems hard.

Shooting pains along the limbs. Sudden, violent onset of vascular congestion, acute inflamation of joints, with redness, spasms, also stifness and cramps-like pains on spine. Involuntary limping, cold extremities. (Also: headache worsened by light, noise, movement, sun)
worse by motion, touch, afternoon, lying
better by semi erect position, warmth
Venous congestion, deep injuries (surgery), trauma to soft tissue (especially breasts), itching and pain on thighs.
worse left side, hot bath and warmth of bed, cold bathing, cold wind, before storms
Swelling of joints, redness, warmth, stitching pains. Especially on left side. Knees stiff and painful
worse by motion and morning, eating, hot weather, touch, better by rest and pressure, cold, lying on painful side
Open wounds, ulcers, bleeding, skin damage (blisters)
Contraction of tendons, tearing and burning pains, restless legs at night. Left-sided sciatica,
worse by motion, dryness, cold and evening,
better by warmth, lying on warm bed, wet weather
Soft swelling, pale red, very tender to touch. Second and third phalangeal joints of left foot. Paralytic starting, tearings in the muscles and in the bones of the legs, thighs, knees, feet and the toes, esp on being touched (rheumatic pains, not worse from motion), hot swelling right knee, uneasiness in legs with need to move them constantly, curve and draw up. Swelling of the feet, sometimes with red spots, tention and deep coloured urine. Soft swelling of the soles. Paralysis of the feet. General swelling of body. Oversensitiveness of nerves from loss of fluids. Distension of blood vessels. Dryness and sensibility of skin.

Use ferrum phosphoricum when very tired but still in need to perfom well.
Varicose veins, tired feeling in arms and legs, sore muscles and joints, hemorrages, bad return of blood from legs
worse by warm, moist air
Injuries to nerves, pains go upward, neck and spine sensitive, cramps in calves, pain in the tips of toes and fingers, sciatica, crawiling in the hands and feet
worse by touch, motion, lying on back, cold, damp, closed room
better by bending backward, rest, rubbing
Swollen joints (especially small joints), cracking in joints, contraction of tendons and muscles, stiffness, cold or hot joints. Craking of joints. Ball of great toe swollen.
worse by heat of bed, warmth, motion, night, touch
better by cold, cold bathing and rest
Painful swelling of bones of feet, nightly tearing pains in extremities, with sweating. Weakness from slight exertion. Trembling extremities (esp hands)
worse from warmth of bed, evening, pressure, motion, lying on right side, perspiring, warm room
Low back lame, as if broken (desire for support), sharp stitches, craking knees, knees giving up, cold feeling on joints, contraction of hamstrings, weakness. Knees especially feel weak, numbness and tingling in fingers and lower extremities. Contraction of hamstrings.
worse morning (10am), sitting, sea shore, heat, talking
better lying on hard surface, open air, cold bathing, tight clothing
Soreness all over, shock-like pains, changing rapidly, comes and goes abruptly, pain below knees and elbows, shoulder stiff, heels ache (worse by elevating feet or lying), bone pains at night or from damp and cold, feet puffed.
worse by damp, cold, pressure, motion, night (bones), morning (joints), change of weather, electrical changes
better by warmth, rest, dry weather, daytime
Chronic arthritis or acute sprains, stiffness, restlessness. Hot, painful swelling of joints, tearing pain in tendons, ligaments and fasciae. Sciatica. Tearing down the thighs. Numbness after overwork and exposure.
worse on cold, first motion, after rest, during rest, cold air
better after continued motion, warmth, walking, change of position, rubbing, warm applications, stretching out limbs
Joint, tendon, cartilage damage or weakness, especially wrist, knee, ankle and low back. Knees give way on rising and climbing stairs. Thigh pain on stretching out limbs. Great restlessness
worse by sitting, lying, first motion, touch, cold, evening
better by continued motion, pressure
Weakness of legs, cramps, tiredness, stifness (just like when lactic acid accumulates)
Extremities swollen, red, joints inflamed, pain goes downward, worse on motion, craking joints, cramping of calves at night. Foul perspiration, sweaty hands. Burning in soles of feet and hands at night.
worse standing, motion (back pains), warm room or bed, night, touch, rest, 11am
better by motion (legs, hips, elbow, wrists), dry weather
good after bryonia
Trauma to bone and periosteum. Prickling pain, pain at the site of old wounds or fractures
worse by touch, motion, pressure
better by gentle motion, warmth
For prevention of dehydration and cramps, you can try using ocassionally (maybe once a day on multiday events) tissue salts, such as Bioplasma.
They do not have any significant amount of salt, but are supposed to teach your body how to use the salts correctly. You still need to ingest salt (sodium, potassium, calcium, etc) by regular eating or, if you want, by salt capsules.
You can buy ready or have them made to order on pharmacy. I find salt capsules super-important on single-day events and training days.
For multi-day you are problably getting enough salts from food and eventual supplements. If it is too hot, then still you might want to use them.

This gel or ointment (you can choose) is a general, all purpose formula to deal with many possible situations. Therefore, it might not be the best for each individual case. But still it can be quite good. Use it a few times, until you feel relief.
You can find similar commercial ointments such as Traumeel. I, however, greatly favour this one over Traumeel.

SOME WORDS ON HOMEOPATHY

Sri Aurobindo once made a comparison between allopathy and homeopathy. He said that homeopathy is far better because it deals with nerves and it can enter into the subtle nerves. Everything is in the subtle nerves.
I am not an expert either in homeopathy or in allopathy. When my homeopathic doctors cure patients, I say "Excellent, excellent!". But sometimes they do not cure. I care for the results.
I believe in homeopathy more than allopathy, but the homeopathic doctors have to know their field thoroughly. Otherwise, just to study a few books is not enough. A good homeopath needs lifelong experience. My mentor was one of those. He gave me a list of eight different homeopathic medicines and said, "Learn their names and their properties by heart. You do not have to go through hundreds of medicines. Eight if you can learn, it will be enough for you." He gave me the list, and I learnt it. At that time I knew about forty or fifty remedies by heart. Now perhaps I know only ten.
In the Ashram, homeopaths gave better results than allopaths. The allopathic doctors were all very great doctors. They received their degrees from abroad. But our Ashram homeopaths achieved better results.
No matter which type of medicine you prefer, if you have faith, then so much the better. Faith will cure you, whether doctors give you the correct medicine or not. But I have to say that the little homeopathic pills can create miracles. Everything is inside us. If homeopathy can penetrate and go deep within to cure, then it touches the root.
The funny thing is that, if you take homeopathic pills and they aggravate your problem, so much the better! You take the medicine and, if your condiciont becomes temporarily worse, then the medicine is working. It is hard to believe, but so often it is true. First your health takes a wrong direction. Then you are cured. It has happened many, many times. If the result is worse, then you are getting better. That is very hard to understand.

The Homeopathic Remedy
Last night during my 20-mile training run, I tried some homeopathic medicine. As soon as I take that medicine, my mind gets clear. Then, in my nose, eyes, ears and down to my neck, I feel a flowing sensation. But below the neck-to my legs, chest, heart, stomach, thighs, knees-the medicine does not reach. Each time I take it, almost instantly I feel that my head has become light. But unfortunately my head is not carrying my whole body. My chest, legs, heart-absolutely nothing below my neck works better when I take that medicine. For me, nothing works.
Perhaps if I had taken this homeopathic remedy at around ten miles it would have helped me. When I took it at 16 miles, it was too late. It is a cream. At that point a cream will not take away my fatigue quickly.
