My 5 year old male cat is coughing every day after eating. It’s a short and dry, non-productive cough like when we clear our throats. He’s mouth is closed when he does it, not like when he has a hairball or asthma attack, and he sticks his neck out.

He’s the sweetest most loyal cat, just enjoys sleeping next to me, playing with his new girlfriend, running around and fighting with her. His breathing is not affected and he doesn’t cough when he exercises and plays. He’s very easy scared, tho.

Since he was little he has had gastric problems, throwing up every day until we got him stable with a hypoallergenic diet and he’s been fine ever since. Less than a year ago he had an asthma attack, went to the emergency and got a cortisone shot and was ok for a while but kept having some wheezing and snoring so he took another shot, antibiotics, had a number of X-rays done, but the lungs always looked the same. A few months ago he has been diagnosed with a heart murmur and the echocardiogram showed a hypertrophy but the doctor didn’t think he needed meds cause he displays no syptoms of it.

However, he still keeps coughing after his morning and evening meals, not his afternoon one for some reason. I’ve changed his dry food, tried wet food and also added water to both of them, raised the bowl, but nothing has helped. At this point I don’t know if this is a lung, heart or digestive problem that he’s having, all I know is I’m sick of spending fortunes at the vet, forcing harsh chemicals down his throat and seeing no results. I don’t want to do any invasive exams either, that require him to be under sedation or stress him out even more.

So, I read Bryonia could help and have been giving him Bryonia 15 CH for the last 3 days but he’s not getting better, if anything he’s coughing even more. I’m also not sure how many granules I should be giving him, sometimes I give one to his mouth; other times I dissolve 2 or 3 in a needless syringe with 2 ml of bottled water. I also have Phosphorus 9CH and Nux Vomica 30CH at home that I could try or I can buy other things, of course. I’m just lost! What should I give him and how should I do it?!

As you can see below there are some 40 remedies that cover this symptom.  If it were my dog, I’d take it to a vet immediately.

Do you mean a regular vet or an homeopathic vet? I did call one and she said to try bryonia 15ch for a month and so I bought it, but it looked like he was coughing more so I stopped and am giving him phosphorus 9 ch, 2 granules a day diluted in 2 ml bottle water each.

I understand you are an homeopath, are you also vet? I have his exams, the x-rays and echocardiogram and can discribe all his symptoms if anyone knows how to interpret it. He gets so stressed going to the vet, he just wants to be left alone and be happy in his home, I don’t want to aggravate him even more and don’t even know who to trust or who is a quack. If you have the knowledge please, I beg you to help me, I’ll give you any information you may need for the diagnosis, I’m even willing to pay if you can cure him I just want what’s best for him. I’m going through hell in my life, there’s another post of mine out there you can read, this is too much for me too handle right now, please I really do need help.

Dr. Larry Bernstein has been a veterinarian since graduation from the University of Pennsylvania veterinary school in 1977 and has been using alternative medicine since 1991. He is certified by IVAS in Acupuncture, the AVH in homeopathy and has taken the AVCA training in chiropractic. His first love, although, is homeopathy. He studied with Dr. Richard Pitcairn in 1993 and was one of the earliest veterinarians certified in homeopathy by the Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy. He served on the AVH national board since its creation in 1997 until 2004 and is the past-President and an honorary lifetime member. He is a graduate of both the Dynamis School of Homeopathy (3 year training) and the New England School of Homeopathy (2 year course). He is a lifetime member of the National Center of Homeopathy and current president-elect of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association. He presently has a 100% holistic practice in Florida where he both sees clients and does telephone consultations in homeopathy all over the world.

I don’t understand why the vet told you to give Bry for a month. You need someone who will stay with you on this.  You could try this fellow (above). Regarding all those tests you have: Were they related to this cough?  I understand not wanting to stress your cat.  I hate taking animals to allopaths.  If you connect with a competent homeopathic vet by phone, he/she could decide if your cat needs a diagnosis.    Dr. Bernstein sounds like a decent fellow (above). Why not give him a call.  Perhaps he can help, or recommend someone.

I greatly appreciate your input but I’m not from the USA. Unfortunetly, I’m also in a terrible place money wise and can’t take him to a vet at this stage but when I’m better I will surely do that.

However if anyone out there has had a similar situation or can recommend something, I would be very thankful. This is a very despairing situation.

Send me all of the cat’s symptoms, whether she is thirsty or not, like warmth or cool, etc.  Anything about past history also. Send it to my email:   Alanheal@aol.com

I’ll forward it to Dr.Deva Khalsa. If she’s still at home, she’ll send us an answer.

Just sent you the email, I put the information from this post and added a few more things that may help. Let’s hope we still catch Dr. Deva Khalsa at home! 🙂

here is a video I made of him coughing today, 3 minutes after he finished eating. Please put the sound very loud so you can hear the cough that happens 3 seconds in (when he has his head down). I had given phosphorus 9 ch about 35 minutes before giving him the food. Feel free to forward it to Dr. Deva Khalsa if you think it will help (the link is youtu.be/Iep_6GO56uo ). Thank you once again.

I must add that this is the “light” version of his cough, yesterday and today it was worse. Any news from Dr. Deva yet? I’ve researched her and am really hopeful she can help, it would be an honour to have her look into this case.

Someone online told me to give him Nux Vomica 200 but I’m not confortable following their advise and would much rather wait for the Dr’s opinion.

I’m going to the homeopathic pharmacy tomorrow so it would be great if I could get some input until then because it’s somewhat far from where I live and the poor cat needs help. He means the world to me.

I haven’t hear from Dr Khalsa yet, so it’s possible she’d already left on her trip.

ohh 🙁

In you experience, could nux vomica help with cough? and would 200 be an ok potency for a cat that size, if that matters at all? I have nux vom 30 at home I could try

also can you tell me if its ok for cats to take homeopathic pills, since they are made of sugar and lactose, especially being a food sensitive cat, is it safe for them? He has been experiencing diarrhea but can be from the food change we’ve made. I just worry that I gave him too much or that it could cause diabetes from all the sugar, they are so sweet!

Dr. Khalsa just replied. (Please remember that she wasn’t able to examine your cat.)

Dr. Khalsa:   It sounds like asthma which is due to allergies.   It is not so easy to treat. Ipecac 6c three times a day for a month or more and change to hypoallergenic food with novel protein like rabbit and peas.

Thank you very much, I’ll try to buy that tomorrow!

Did she explain, or do you know, how many granules/per dose should I give him and the right way to administer it? For example, if I dissolve it/them in 2ml of water and give it all or dissolve in half a glass and just give a teaspoon?

If you have tiny granules you can place 15 or so in a new unused 1 ounce dropper bottle, fill almost to the top with filtered or spring water and add 15 drops of grain (drinking) alcohol to keep it fresh. For each dose, place 5 drops from the dropper bottle in 4 ounces of spring or filtered water, stir and give the cat a few drops of that.  You can buy inexpensive plastic disposable pipettes to administer the doses.  Before each dose, tap the dropper bottle 7 times against a book to succuss it.
