2 years ago, my 4 year old Boxer was diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease, Lymphangiectasia (which almost killed him) and an auto immune disease. His Internal Organ Specialist said it was unadvisable to vaccinate him from here on out and stated she would be happy to write a letter to the city informing them of his disease with supporting documentation and her advisable exemption of my boxer to the vaccine. He is on a strict hydrolyzed protein and hypoallergenic diet and down to only 5 pills a day. This being the daily regiment for the rest of his life, he has responded incredibly well with this treatment and had gained his 20lbs back in no time. By looking at him now, he looks and acts incredibly healthy and one wouldn’t know of his chronic disease.

Two weeks ago, his family vet informed me that California law recently changed and requires all pets to get the rabies vaccine. Long story short- If I were to opt out of getting him his rabies vaccine and he were exposed to the rabies virus, the likely resolution would not be quarantine, but euthanasia. My family vet is amazing, but I was left feeling uncertain with a possible suggestion to “maybe” help him not have a negative reaction. She suggested giving him Benadryl everyday for a week leading up to the vaccine day and continue for 3 days following.

Upon searching the web, I had come across a homeopathic remedy that stated it helps reverse the damage the rabies vaccine causes. Something called Lyssin (30C). But it said it was only good to use in healthy pets. I know nothing about the homeopathic route, but I’m desperate for accurate information, dosage for my 78lbs boxer and a clear understanding of how this should be given to him. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

The best option (as you already know) is to continue no vaccines. What are the chances your dog would be exposed to rabies? How much contact does he have with other people or dogs?  Have you read the actual laws for your state or just went by what your vet told you?

I am not a homeopath. I come here for advice myself. Perhaps one of the homeopaths will answer you about lyssin.

I have a dog which I have not vaccinated for rabies as she has problems, but I did order something from a homeopathic vet in case I decide to vaccinate. It’s a rabies vaccine tautode which is given before and after a rabies vaccination to help prevent vaccination problems.  I got it from Dr. Wil Falconer at vitalanimal.com. You may be able to get it from other homeopathic vets also.

Best wishes to you and your dog.

The tauopathic remedy seems a good idea. Generally a dose of ledum before the vaccine, followed by Thuja after, will provide some protection. If symptoms of abscess, fever or convulsions occur, Silica is usually indicated. Other symptoms mayh require thuja or other remedies.  Check the law and see if there are exceptions to it.

Thank you Rebecca and Alan for your replies. I work in Boxer Rescue and asked a long time boxer owner this past weekend that knows my boxer well and who also does not vaccinate her boxers what she thinks I should do. She told me that after the puppy shots and age 1 year old full round of vaccines, she doesn’t vaccinate after that. She has a vet that informed her that in general we are over vaccinating our pets and those puppy and age one round is good for the rest of the pets life. She does do the yearly titer test which has never been a problem. She also mentioned with my boxers disease, it is not worth the risk of him possibly dying over. I am in total agreeance with her.

In reply to the California laws with regards to the rabies vaccine. – Yes, I was at the computer with my vet as she pulled up the information from the webpage and we reviewed the information together.

There was a lady bitten by a rat recently down the street which had rabies and she had to do the 20 something round of shots in her stomach. Hearing how close that is to home is what caused the serious concern for me to consider the rabies vaccine. Instead, I am going to be placing rat traps in strategic locations and not re-vaccinate my boxer.

Calif (and many states in the USA) allow for rabies vaccine exemption.  Animals with ANY health condition qualify for a vaccine exemption and should never be vaccinated or re-vaccinated (rabies or any other vaccine).  The best vets in my opinion are homeopaths.  They’re also the most likely to give vaccine exemption letters because they’re more educated and fully understand the situation.  These links will help you:  http://www.thedogplace.org/VAC…..2012.asp  –  http://www.dogs4dogs.com/blog/…..ptions/.  Our dogs all have health problems and each has a vaccine exemption because of it.  Vaccines and pet foods cause damage.  Each generation is worse then the previous one.  It’s impossible to have healthy offspring when you vaccinate and feed improper/poor nutrition.  The vaccines damage and alter DNA; look at all the birth defects and health problems we see now in animals and people.  It’s staggering.  The only way to have a truly healthy animal is to get one from a natural rearing breeder whose line has never been vaccinated and is fed the species correct diet.  The more generations that are unvaccinated and fed properly, the better the offspring.  For dogs, the correct diet is raw meat and bones.
