Hi All,

My dog has recently developed a sort of skin rash which is spreading along his leg. Could this perhaps be mange? I have purchased several ointments for dogs, which has helped partially or didn’t help at all. Could anyone please advise what sort of skin disease is this and how I could treat it.IMG-20150108-03179.jpgImage Enlarger

Is that the only spot he has it? Mange will not usually affect just one spot. Did the spot start out small and get bigger or did you just notice the big spot one day?

It started spreading overtime. It covered a small area of his knees initially. He has the rash on his front legs as well as his hind legs.

I see Dr. Khalsa answered in the Ask the Vet column that you should take the dog in for a vet to examine.  Are you able to do that?  That picture looks like more than a rash.  It is weird that it is only on his knees/elbows.  Is he an outside dog where he may have been exposed to some environmental toxin? Does he seem sick other than the skin problem? Are those spots itchy?  As Dr. Khalsa said, it could be many things. I hope you will be able to have him examined.

He is an outside dog. We have a properly secured place, meaning he cannot go on the streets. We’re not from a heavily industrial area and we always keep chemical substances well out of reach. But sometimes when it does rain, there’s standing water at some places around our house which he does drink. He does seem to be lethargic sometimes. We have another male dog who is an alsatian. He seems to be completely unaffected by this disorder and is healthy and fit.

I have made an appointment to take him to the vet. Hope all goes well.
